Marie Slamtoinette

vivelareine:

Ambassador Mercy to Maria Theresa, March 1774
Mme la dauphine had a great desire to go to the masked ball at the Opera House; but, knowing that M. le dauphin does not like these sorts of balls … she asked [the comtesse de Provence] to talk to M. le dauphin and say she wanted to go to the ball, and not let the young prince know that [the dauphine] had anything to do with the request. Mme de Provence promised to do this; she then reported that M. le dauphin had not wanted to [go to the ball] …
Several days later, M. le dauphin and Mme la dauphine were having a friendly and loving talk and the question of the ball arose. Me. le dauphin told [the dauphine] that when Madame de Provence had spoken to him about the ball, she told him to keep it a secret, but that Mme la dauphine had asked her to approach him … [and that] she did not enjoy these types of amusements … and that she only went from obligingness to [the dauphine], who only seemed to find pleasure in these frivolous amusements.
The venom of such thoughtless spitefulness had greatly shocked M. le dauphin, and he told [the dauphine] in a kindly way that … he would always approve of her carrying out the arrangements necessary for her amusements.

The more I learn about Louis and Marie’s relationship, the more loving and tender they seem.
